Contentment ...

Weekends
are every day
If you start the week
tomorrow.

Look at
a lovely girl
close enough,
and she's so

human that
you won't want
to cheat on your wife
anymore.

Dog shit's
not so gross
once you've picked
it up –

Or dishes
or deadlines
or miles to run
or dying.

Last moments
are every day if you
spend each tomorrow
first-timing.

  1. While exploring the notion of restarting and revilization, the poem urges the reader to do what they hesitate to do. The first stanza remarks that “weekends/ are every day” (1-2) if one chooses to start the week whenever they want. One has the ablility to maniputalte their life in whatever way they want. Also, the poem advocates for the reader to simply do what they perceieve as gross, such as dog poop, because it is “not so gross/once you've/picked it up” (13-15). The dog poop has to be picked up and thrown away because once it is put away, it is not as disgusting and becomes easier to handle and work with. The poem effectivley pushes for one to take control and do whatever they want, as in the end, it will be better than it was before.

  2. This poem embraces the idea of living every single moment as though it may be your last. It stresses the concept that all of the good, bad, and ugly in this world are essentially not worth the emotional attachment that was once held to them once the action is finished. If a person simply takes action in their life, then each task they must attend to will not be as dreaded. This is because if one takes control of their actions rather than postponing the inevitable, they will not have to go through the constant reminder to finally do what is perceived as right or what needs to be accomplished.

  3. This poem emphasizes the idea that nothing is completely perfect nor imperfect, regardless of how much you want it to be so. It is all about perspective. The lines "Look at / a lovely girl / close enough, / and she's so / human that / you won't want / to cheat on your wife / anymore." represents the effect that unveiling reality can have. In this example of cheating, realizing the imperfections of this "mistress" brings the cheating spouse to come to the conclusion that she is not worth the time. All though there are many immoral aspects of that example, it shows how getting rid of idealistic views can help an individual come to a realization that can impact his/her life in a specific way. The lines “Dog shit’s / not so gross / once you’ve picked / it up --” show how even unfortunate aspects of life are not always as bad as they first seem. This relates to the idea of first impressions. People have preconceived ideas about certain things but experience and relationships get rid of superficiality or misconceptions.

  4. The poem really captures idea that everything is everlasting yet temporary, always contradicting one another. It emphasizes that all is based on perception. Much like the fact that “Weekends/ are every day” and the “lovely girl” and the “Dog shit” are based on perception. Perception dictates how certain topics are viewed as temporary or everlasting. Like in society nothing is controversial or provocative unless one makes is controversial. Overall everything, every event, and or every idea is either everlasting or temporary based on the perception of how it is viewed, yet the knowledge of the state of the entity is never directly known.
