Roll like thunder (lullabye anthem) ...

{ The Melody }

Sometimes the mind feels like an engine, cracked:
like it's never going to be alright.
But that's only 'cause your tired now:
Go and chase the night, fall into the night.

          You've got to roll like thunder, girl.
               You've got to rock like the sea,
               Break like the wind and come back again,
               Just like history – like history.

Some people say that it will never change,
that the chance was then, and now is lost.
But every life's a debt before again:
It's precious past the hurt; I swear it's worth the cost.

     You've got to roll like thunder, girl.
          You've got to rock like the sea,
          Break like the wind and come on back
          Again, like history – like history.

Once there was something, and I don't know what –
It seems so small and slight and far away –
Back then it felt like all and everything:
I think it's yesterday. It's all just yesterday.

     You've got to roll like thunder, girl.
          You've got to rock like the sea,
          Break like the wind and come on back
          Again, like history – like history.

                        *[Instru.]

Breathe in, a flower on a shaded field;
Breathe out, a whistle from a mountain cave.
You own the air your mouth was cooled by;
The more you let it go, the less you'll need to save.

     Go on and roll like thunder, girl.
          Go on and rock like the sea,
          Break like the wind and come back again
          Just like history – like history.

  1. for a little girl I've never sung to sleep. not yet, anyway – 15/16 January 2013.

    * "I swear it's worth the cost" -
    orig. “It's always worth the cost.” But that's less personal, more the logical thrust of a deduction than the emotional stake of a promise. And lullabyes & anthems need to have heart. Plenty of heart (that's how you get to sleep with a clear head).

  2. I love this song about pushing past boundaries to explore whatever comes your way. That it is a lullabye, meant to be sung to a little girl to put her to sleep, makes it all the better. The song is telling that little girl to grow up strong and confident; to not worry about the struggles of the moment and to always remember that things will be different in the future. In the chorus you write, “You've got to roll like thunder, girl. / You've got to rock like the sea, / Break like the wind and come on back / Again, like history – like history.” This reference to the power of nature, as well as it’s cyclical character, tells the listener that they should try to emulate nature’s unstoppable force. You should not care about what other’s say or do; instead, you should follow your own heart and do whatever you set your mind to. However, in all your quests, you have to remember where you came from and the people that nurtured you. Overall, I think that the song is saying that you have to own the space you take up in the world as well as you have to be able to move on from difficult situations, both lessons the natural world can teach.

  3. In my eyes, this poem is talking about mistakes yet telling us to keep our confidence, because if one does that, one will be forever remembered and true to the person they want to become. For example, although one might make an error (we all do since we are human) making us feel like our “mind [is] like an engine: cracked,/ like it’s never going to be alright” nothing is permanent in this world and everything will start again in the morning if you have self-confidence. If mistakes happen, we should always “chase the night” “roll like thunder” and “rock the sea,” images that represent strength; therefore, hinting at confidence. I think the repeating stanzas are particularly interesting. I took this to represent the ongoing actions and continuum of all human mistakes; however, this poem idealizes mistakes, because only with mistakes will you build belief in yourself. For my sport, crew or rowing, my coach is a very motivational person who helps us break down walls that everyone builds up, telling us to realize that tomorrow is a new day and not to dwell on the past, rather we should see what we did wrong, so next time an incident like this occurs, you know what to do with confidence.
