If I say one thing (Who you gonna love?) {song}

I was—skating along,
Minding my own business,         but
Then I heard a dove—coo by another dove:
In a world full of pain,          and
Joys that you share with us,
Who would keep ne-earest;
Who you gonna love?

             Would you love someone who
             Straight-up abuse you—
             Blame and accuse you, Tell you you're dumb—

Or
                   would you choose a face who,
             When they lock eyes with ya',
             It's to learn the insides of ya',
             To see where you're from?

So I'm—skating along,
Minding my own business,      but
Those birds keep poppin' in my brain, ticklin' my blood:
In a world full of pain,       and
Joys that shake us apart,
Where do you rest your heart;
Who you gonna love?

             Would you love someone who
             Doesn't understand you?
             They might hold you hand, b't their arm's a million miles long...

Or
                   would you walk a room with
             Someone who shares that scene;
             Even no words or touch between,
             They know the page you're on?

So I'm—skating along,
Minding my own business,           but
“Who you gonna love? Who you go-onna love?”
In a world full of pain,         and
Joys that you hold inside,
When do those wings go wide;
Who you gonna love?

             Would you love someone who
             Doesn't accept you;
             Tries to fix and correct you, tells you you're wrong?

Or
                   would you brave these days with
             Someone whose humble sight
             Knows there's a million ways to 'right';
             T' harmonize with your song.

[instrumental:]

So I'll keep—skating along, just
Minding my own business,       but
“Who you gonna love? Who you go-onna love?”
In a world full of pain,      and
Joys that you share with us,
Who would keep ne-earest;
Who you gonna love?

I said, Whooo—
you gonna love?
                              Darlin',

Who—
are you
             goin'—
                       to-o

                          Lo-o-ove?

  1. At first, I imagined this song to have a slow acoustic background and be sung by a wistful singer. On the second read, however, I think that this song fits more as a rap. I can just imagine the returning chorus and the verses flowing from one to the other with the m dashes being a little pause before it starts into another flow. The speaker is a lonely person, trying to accept their singularity and mind their own business. Yet, the question of who they are “gonna love” keeps bugging their mind. The speaker does not know who they want or what they want in the future and that uncertainty unsteadies them because they know they will need someone to lean on in the “world full of pain”. I related a lot to this because there is always the question in my mind of who is the right person to love that will share my joy and pain. There are so many possibilities and uncertainties and this song just skims the surface. Obviously, most people would prefer the latter of the three sets of either or options in the song. However, most often the latter is the hardest to find and the former is the type of relationship you see in the world today. This question of who I was going to love always used to riddle my brain and fill me with uncertainty. Through luck, listening, and patience I now have people in my life that are the latter. They seek to understand me and seek to understand them. I can mind my own business now without this question bugging me all the time. I know life has its ups and down though so I am sure this question will always stay with me and make me a better person.
